Many free Wills quietly appoint the provider as executor. Executor’s fees in South Africa may be charged at up to 3.5% of the gross value of your estate plus VAT, before anyone inherits a cent. On a R3 million estate that can be more than R120 000, and a bond on your home does not reduce it. The fee is a maximum, not a fixed price, and it can be negotiated or set in the Will itself.
